Head to Friar Tuck’s in Mystic & More Breweries in Connecticut

The art of brewing dates back to Colonial times in New England, and the industry continues to this day in Mystic and beyond. One of our favorite places to grab a beer is Friar Tuck’s in Mystic, a long-time Irish tavern for visitors and locals alike to enjoy an impressive tap list of locally and nationally brewed ales, craft cocktails, and a meal with favorite items, including classic pub dishes and innovative new American fare. It’s also a fantastic place to catch live music, play trivia, or sing karaoke.

While Friar Tuck’s in Mystic pours a thoughtfully curated list of locally brewed beers, there’s a handful of breweries in Connecticut in the area where beers are brewed on-site. These breweries in Connecticut are serving up tasty brews and fun bar snacks (or allow outside food can be brought in) to be enjoyed in these laid-back casual brewpubs. 1. Outer Light Brewing Company: You’ll find indoor and outdoor seating at this industrial-style brewery with lofty ceilings, rustic wood, and corrugated metal siding. Grab a spot on the patio for one of their classic IPAs or creative seasonal beers.
  2. Bank and Bridge Brewing: This is one of the breweries in Connecticut with a great back story. Located in a remodeled bank building, much of the architectural touches are still in place, and it’s a very cool place to grab a pint. Head here for happy hour (drink and food specials) Monday to Thursday from 3 pm-6 pm.
  3. Barley Head Brewing: Located in the heart of downtown Mystic, this nano-brewery and bar is known for its small-batch beers that change frequently. Outside take-out food from nearby Mystic restaurants is encouraged, but don’t miss their hot soft pretzel served with mustard, which pairs perfectly with one of their hoppy brews. It’s located just a block away from Friar Tuck’s in Mystic.
  4. Beer’d Brewing Company: Known as one of the most popular breweries in Connecticut, there are two locations near Mystic to visit to try these beers. The Stonington location is known as “the Mill” and has a beer garden and taproom for pints and bites. In Groton, dubbed “the Silo,” caters to the 21-and-up-crowd for an excellent bar spot to have a beer.
  5. Tox Brewing: The tagline for this brewery in New London is “Delicately crafted. Dangerously drinkable.” Head here for a tasting flight that includes pours of their freshly brewed IPAs, fruited sours, and farmhouse-style ales.
  6. Friar Tuck’s in Mystic: This is downtown Mystic’s only sports bar. It’s locally owned with a talented and friendly staff, an impressive assortment of entrees and appetizers, sports, and live music—Friar Tuck’s in Mystic is the place to be especially on game day!
  7. Jealous Monk: If you’re in the mood for German favorites like soft pretzels, bratwurst, and schnitzel, this Bavarian brewpub and beer garden has your ticket.
