About Stonecroft Inn

Stonecroft Inn traces its roots back to 1807, when renowned sea captain and livestock farmer Shubel Smith built the original Georgian Colonial home on land gifted by his father. Set amid the rolling countryside of Ledyard, just minutes from Mystic, CT, the estate has long been a place of both quiet beauty and industrious purpose.

Captain Smith, a Yankee trader born in 1775, raised livestock for trade in the West Indies. The property's enduring stone walls are thought to have once corralled his animals. The home itself—crafted using materials from an earlier structure—features hallmark elements of the era, including wide-plank floors, a spacious kitchen, and even a working loom, believed to date back to its construction.

After more than a century in the Smith family, the estate gradually transitioned from a working farm to a destination for rest and romance. In the wake of the 1938 New England Hurricane, the original barn was destroyed and rebuilt on the same foundation. That barn, lovingly restored, now serves as the Yellow Barn, a stylish complement to the historic 1807 House.

In the 1990s, the estate officially became Stonecroft Country Inn, opening its doors to guests seeking a peaceful retreat. The Inn now features 10 unique guest rooms, combining historic charm with modern comforts like gas fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Guests enjoy gourmet three-course breakfasts and personalized service, all within the Inn's 6.5 acres of manicured gardens, koi ponds, and terraced lawns.

Recognized by the Select Registry Distinguished Inns of North America, Stonecroft is also a beloved venue for weddings, vow renewals, and romantic getaways. Its legacy-rooted in maritime tradition, New England craftsmanship, and heartfelt hospitality-continues to inspire every guest experience.

Romantic Mystic - Jim was so nice. He was friendly, helpful, accommodating, and interesting. Our room, the Nor'easter, was nicely decorated and spacious, and we loved being able to control the thermostat. The double doors leading from our room onto the wonderful deck were fabulous. We enjoyed sitting out there reading after breakfast and before dinner. Breakfast was delicious. The location is perfect - in minutes you are in downtown Mystic or at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods. We can't wait to return.
