The Most Romantic Things to Do in Mystic, CT

After your ceremony, you'll want to linger in the area and take full advantage of being in one of New England's most romantic destinations. Mystic has everything a couple could ask for — waterfront dining, historic sailing ships, beautiful coastal trails, and one-of-a-kind experiences on the water.

1. Mystic Seaport Museum

The largest maritime museum in the United States, Mystic Seaport Museum sits on 19 acres along the Mystic River and offers a one-of-a-kind backdrop for couples who love history and the sea. Wander through a recreated 19th-century coastal village, board historic ships including the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan (a National Historic Landmark), take a scenic boat ride, or simply stroll the waterfront together. The museum is open daily, with tickets starting at $40 per adult.

2. A Cruise with Mystic River Cruises

For a truly romantic experience, book a private cruise aboard the Mystic River Cruises 1947 antique wooden motorboat. Each 90-minute cruise carries a maximum of six guests for an intimate, personalized experience, gliding under the famous Mystic drawbridge and out toward Fishers Island Sound while Captain Erick shares the history of the river and its landmarks. Sunset cruise options are available, and guests are welcome to bring their own food and beverages. Cruises are seasonal, typically running April through November.

3. Dinner at The Shipwright's Daughter

For the finest dinner in the area, reserve a table at The Shipwright's Daughter — a James Beard Award-winning restaurant led by Chef David Standridge, recognized as Best Chef: Northeast in 2024. Located in the heart of downtown Mystic inside The Whaler's Inn, the menu changes daily and is rooted in locally caught seafood and produce from nearby farms. The wine list has been recognized by Wine Enthusiast since 2022. Reservations are strongly recommended.

4. Dinner at Oyster Club

Another outstanding option for a special meal is Oyster Club, a beloved farm-and-sea-to-table restaurant on Water Street led by Chef Renee Touponce, a James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Chef. The menu changes daily and features the freshest local seafood, oysters, and produce in a warm, intimate setting. In warmer months, the rooftop Treehouse offers outdoor dining with gorgeous Mystic River views. Open Thursday through Monday for dinner (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).

5. Dinner at Captain Daniel Packer Inne

Built in 1756, the Captain Daniel Packer Inne is one of Mystic's most storied dining destinations — a 250-year-old riverside landmark serving classic New England fare in a warm, candlelit atmosphere. Favorites include New England clam chowder, scallops, and grilled filet. Open daily for lunch and dinner, with a lively pub downstairs for live music on select nights.

6. Hike Bluff Point State Park

For couples who love the outdoors, Bluff Point State Park in neighboring Groton is one of the most scenic and beloved parks in Connecticut. The 806-acre coastal reserve encompasses a barrier beach, salt marshes, forested trails, and stunning views over Fishers Island Sound. The main trail to the bluff and back is about 2.6 miles and is open year-round, welcoming hikers, cyclists, and dogs. Free admission with parking available at 55 Depot Road, Groton.

7. Shopping at Olde Mistick Village

For a leisurely afternoon of browsing, Olde Mistick Village is a charming open-air shopping destination featuring a collection of specialty shops, boutiques, and local businesses in a picturesque New England village setting — just minutes from the inn.
